American Airlines has announced that they are planning to retire 80 of their aircraft from their fleet. These aircraft types include their Airbus A330, Boeing 757, Boeing 767, Embraer E190 and Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft due to current financial strain due to the Coronavirus.

The airline have planned to retire their E190 and Boeing 767 first set by the end of 2020 due to cost-cutting measures. The will begin to retire Boeing 757, A330-300, and CRJ200 in the future of 2021. The airline has reported a US$2.24 billion loss for the first quarter of 2020 due to this pandemic, therefore, retiring these aircraft early.

While the airline announced in March that they were going to retire their Boeing 767 early and Boeing 757 in summer 2021, the airline has made a substantial loss in the month of April and believed that it was in their best interest to speed up their retirement process as this situation continues to worsen. It is a pity to see that the airline is going to be getting rid of their iconic Boeing 767 and 757 aircraft so soon. However, they are a lot less fuel-efficient comparing to newer models of aircraft. According to a statement made by the airline, they believe that due to their decreasing passenger demand, they will be experiencing a greater loss in the second quarter of the year.

Initially, American Airlines had a fleet of 17 Boeing 767 and 9 Airbus A330 to cover its trans-Atlantic routes and 34 Boeing 757 for domestic flights. To carry out their East Coast regional flights they used their 20 Embraer 190 and many CRJ aircraft. According to an airline's spokesperson, they have stated that the airline's fleet will remain at 869 mainline aircraft according to their current retirement plan.

At the end of March, the airline announced that they will be retiring their majestic Boeing 767 aircraft. This is significant because they were Boeing's first launch customer of the Boeing 767-300 which served the airline significantly throughout the years.
