The Lufthansa Group announced that Germanwings will be discontinuing their operations. The group launched its first restructuring package due the coronavirus outbreak.

The group was checking if the Germanwings was viable to keep up with operations. Germanwings had 15 Airbus a320s in their fleet. These aircraft were operated under Eurowings. Germanwings flew some Eurowings short haul flights in the past. Unfortunatel, the airline wasn’y able to pull through this crisis. The Group has also announced that they will be reducing the long haul business of Eurowings.

The Lufthansa Group has had the idea since 2012 to mix both Germanwings and Eurowings under the one brand. In 2015, this became a reality. Germanwings havent flown their own flights since, operating Eurowings flights under a wet lease contract.

The airline has a long history dating back 17 years ago. The airline was initially independent starting in 1997. It commenced operations as Eurowings, a low cost carrier, before rebranding to Germanwings in October 2002. In 2008, Lufthansa acquired Germanwings in hope to aim for regional and low costs operations. They used to own 25 Airbus A319s.

In March 2015, Germanwings had a major accident. Flight 9525 crashed into the side of a mountain in the Alps. The Airbus A320 registered D-AIPX was flying from Barcelona to Düsseldorf. This terrible accident killed all 150 passengers and all its crew.
