Icelandair and Air Iceland Connect, connect!

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

Icelandair and Air Iceland Connect merge into one airline. The small airline carries out domestic flights within Iceland as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Icelandic carrier, Icelandair has been integrated with the smaller airline, Air Iceland Connect. This means that multiple roles and departments of this airline will be passed onto Icelandair as a result according to the Icelandair Group. Icelandair will be taking on all support roles of the airline while the Aircraft Operators Certificate for Air Iceland Connect will remain separate. All of their members remain employed by the company.

Air Iceland Connect formerly known as Flugfélag Íslands, performs flights between Reykjavik and Isafjordur, Akureyri and Egilsstadir, along Kulusuk, Narsarsuaq, Nuuk and Ilulissat in Greenland and Torsaven in the Faroe Islands. The airline has recently seen a significant impact in its operations due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Icelandair Group announced on the 23rd of March that Icelandair was only carrying out 14% of their scheduled flights and is expecting operations to reduce even further.

The group has temporarily made restrictions to work hours and has made salary cuts as Icelandair suffers a reduction in flights. This integration has helped with cost saving for the Icelandair Group. However, this has come as a price. Multiple jobs for Air Iceland Connect have paid the price for this cost saving measure. It is impossible to see if this merge of these airlines will be an easy or challenging process for the Air Iceland Connect. However, this global pandemic will continue and it is impossible to foresee the resulting effects on Air Iceland Connect.
