Icelandair to send Boeing 767 to Shanghai

Icelandair sent their Boeing 767-300 to Shanghai, China to collect urgent medical supplies due to the Coronavirus outbreak. On the 8th of April, Icelandair set out to Shanghai from Keflavik International Airport operating flight FI1720. This is the airline‘s longest flight in their 80 years of history. This isn’t the first unusual flight the airline has undergone recently. On the 20th of March, Icelandair flew to Mexico to collect stranded Germans who were passengers on a cruise. Their trip got cut short due to the Coronavirus.


The Boeing 767-300 registered TF-ISW. The aircraft is 22 years old and used to be part of Air New Zealand. In October 2016, it joined the Icelandair fleet. The aircraft underwent a 10 hour flight travelling a round trip that was just under 10,000 nautical miles. The maximum range for a Boeing 767-300 is 5980 nautical miles. TF-ISW stayed on the ground in China for 4 hours. A crew of 11 were onboard which included six pilots, three loadmasters and two engineers. The six pilots were used to keep the return flight running smoothly. They transport a total of 17 tonnes over the duration of their operation.


Icelandair have a fleet of 38 aircraft with an average age of 20.2 years. This fleet includes 4 Boeing 767s with 2 currently parked.
