The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has grounded Lionair due to the recent crash in Manila killing all on board. The crash happened on Sunday night when flight RPC5880 took off from Manila Ninoy Aquino Airport for Tokyo, Japan. The IAI 1124 was carrying eight when the plane went up in flames while taking off from Manila. The pilot, two crew, a doctor, a nurse, a flight medic and an American and Canadian passenger were onboard according to local radio reports. This has been the second fatal crash in the last six months. Therefore, CAAP has decided to ground their entire fleet of seven aircraft and all their helicopters 'while investigation is ongoing'.

'While investigation on the medical evaluation plane RP-C5880 is ongoing, it has been decided that Lionair's entire fleet will be grounded,' a statement announced by CAAP.

On the 9th of September 2019, Lionair's Beechcraft King Air 350 crashed after taking off from Dipolog (DPL/RPMG) to Manila (MNL/RPLL). The medical evacuation flight crashed into a swimming pool in Pansol, 40 km away from Dipolog Airport. The twin-engined plane was airlifting a patient, Tom Carr from Dipolog City to the capital. All 9 on board were killed due to an engine failure.

The IAI 1124's cockpit voice recorder has been located and recovered as the crash scene.

“The recovery will further aid the investigation and help answer why the crash might have occurred, ” announced CAAP.
