Lufthansa have revealed that they will be retiring 6 of their 14 Airbus A380-800s with immediate effect. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the airline believes that this is the best action to take in these difficult times.

The airline were originally going to retire these jumbo jets in 2022. The six that were withdrawn were to be sold back in the upcoming years. It is a mystery about what is going to happen to these massive aircraft. However, the airline confirmed that they are going to be decommissioned. Airbus initially planned to cultivate second-hand Airbus A380s but at the moment it isn't an attractive offer. It is unknown what is going to happen with the A380 market and if they will revitalise after this pandemic.

The Airbus A380-800 has many pros and cons. It normally works brilliantly in the grand scheme of this. With its long range and its seat total of 509, it was very useful for high demand long-haul flights. However, it is an ageing aircraft with four engines. it is not as efficient comparing to the newer, more eco-friendly aircraft in the market. It is not only the Airbus a380 that is suffering, it is also other four engined aircraft in the German fleet. Lufthansa have decided to no longer use their 7 Airbus a340-600s, 3 Airbus a340-300s and 5 Boeing 747-400s in the future.

The other 8 of their Airbus A380s are still in service. However, it is impossible to tell what will unfold in the future.
